The similarity

In South Korea, there is a strong reaction against the Olympics and northern cooperation.

North Korea’s state media, in a gesture that seems certain to accept a more sceptical view, called on “all koreans at home and abroad” to make a “breakthrough” for the unification of the divided peninsula, free from outside interference. It describes the “external forces” of military exercises that did little to help – and it is clear that joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea have in the past caused anger in Pyongyang.

KCNA said South Korea should “promote contacts, travel and cooperation between north and South Korea” and Pyongyang would “crush” any efforts by outside forces to prevent reunification.

North Korean leader Kim jong UN said in his New Year’s address that he would welcome the move, a breakthrough for the games. In the ensuing north-south talks, the two sides reached an agreement on a joint group to resume telephone calls and other talks aimed at easing tensions.
