What it is: Qi Yang, the owner, and his daughter, Jenny Yang, opened the Cluck2Go restaurant in Pasadena, near Pasadena City College more than a month ago. In Rowland heights, the father-daughter team also has full zen food. Cluck2Go specializes in hainan chicken and rice, a classic dish that originated in southern China’s hainan province, including flavored boiled chicken and white rice, as well as chilli and ginger dip. Mr. Yang and her father had invested in Torrance and Arizona’s Asian fast-food restaurants before opening Cluck2Go and Man Chan Cuisine.
Where you are: Colorado avenue, to the west of the Allen street restaurant is next to A game center (children together playing board games and trading CARDS), and some restaurant chain (Chick Fil – A, Panda Express, Carl ‘s Jr.). It was a small, casual storefront with tables and almost no decoration.
What you’re eating: you’re here for hainanese chicken and rice, one of the most comforting dishes of all time. The recipe developed after the owner took over Man Chan Cuisine from the previous owner in 2012 (it’s on the menu there, now the focus of Cluck2Go). Jenny says she and her father saw a lot of things they needed to change about the restaurant, including chicken. “They’re using frozen chickens,” Yang said. “We agree that if we want to make it better, we have to use high quality ingredients.” So they worked with chino’s wynn farm to get fresh birds. Her father also traveled to Singapore and Taiwan to study chicken in hainan and to study recipes.
Jenny says the version here is better than most, cooked with lemon grass, ginger and “many other southeast Asian spices.” Then chicken soup with chicken, and steam it all day long. He flavored his rice with lemongrass, stir-fried garlic and ginger.
Succulent chicken – an internal result of poaching – flavored gravy with lemon grass. The plate was piled high with rice, cooked with garlic and ginger until it was soft and full of chicken. This dish comes with a bowl of clear soup – more light liquids than greasy soups – sipping or soaking.
The chili and ginger sauce arrived with chicken and rice, like the peppers you might have eaten elsewhere, such as Savoy, a hainanese chicken expert in alhambra. Both sauces include ginger, but Chile and chili peppers are all vinegar. The combination of chicken, rice, chilies and ginger is addictive.
You should also order this: Yang and hainan chicken are good at cooking chicken wings. Honey garlic chicken wings are crisp and sticky, reminiscent of the wings of south Korean scuba diving – a perfect prelude to your chicken and rice. You can also order hainan chicken soup; Steamed chicken soup, thick with chewy noodles and cabbage softened leaves.

They may be listed as “appetizers,” but you might want to order Fried bread and dessert. The knots of the Fried dough are soaked with a cup of sweetened condensed milk on the side of a good fluffy doughnut.
